Talk to a Luxury Cruise ConsultantMatching You to the Right Luxury Cruise Companies
There are more luxury cruise companies today than at any time in cruising’s history, and they no longer fit one mould. A consultant does not start with the list of lines. They start with you, and then rule lines in or out.
The Questions That Sort the Field
How formal do you want the evenings?
Some lines keep a dressier tone on some nights; others are relaxed every evening. Neither is better, but the wrong one can grate for a week.
How small is small enough?
Yacht-style ships carry a few hundred guests or fewer. Larger luxury ships offer more restaurants and space but less intimacy.
What do you want included?
Drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi, specialty dining and shore excursions are included on some fares and extra on others.
How active are your days ashore?
Lines that include tours suit people who like to join an organised outing; others suit travellers who prefer to arrange their own.
Who else will be on board?
Age policies, the mix of nationalities and the onboard language all shape the atmosphere.
Where are you going?
Some lines are strongest in Europe, others in expedition regions or long voyages. The region narrows the list quickly.
How the Styles Differ
| Style | Examples | Tends to suit |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive, all-suite ocean ships | Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea, Explora Journeys | Travellers who want almost everything settled in the fare |
| Cultural, adults-focused ocean ships | Viking (guests 18 and over) | Destination-first travellers who like an included tour in port |
| Food-led premium-luxury | Oceania | Guests for whom the restaurants are the main event |
| Yachts and very small ships | The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Windstar | Those who want a private-yacht feel and smaller harbours |
| Luxury expedition | Seabourn, Silversea and Ponant expedition ships | Antarctica, the Arctic and remote coastlines |
| Suites on bigger ships | Suite enclaves on several mainstream lines | Families and groups who want luxury plus big-ship variety |
That table is a starting point, not a ranking. For line-by-line detail, our sister site Luxury Cruise Agent compares the luxury lines, and A Voyage Travel helps you weigh different kinds of voyage.
Signs a Consultant Has Matched You Well
- They can tell you why each line on the shortlist is there — and why others are not.
- They mention a drawback for every option, not just the strengths.
- Their questions about your past trips came before any talk of price.
- The shortlist is short: two or three luxury cruise companies, not ten.
Matching Questions
Which luxury cruise companies are all-suite?
Lines such as Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea and Explora Journeys build their ships around suites. Others, such as Oceania and Viking, are often grouped with luxury lines but use a mix of cabin and suite categories.
Are children allowed on luxury lines?
It varies. Viking does not accept guests under 18 on its ocean ships; other luxury lines accept children but offer little dedicated programming. A consultant checks the line’s current age policy for your sailing.
